This prestigious fellowship carries a value of $14,000 annually for master’s students and $18,000 annually for PhD candidates. Master’s students may hold the fellowship for up to two years, while PhD students can extend it up to four years.
Eligibility for the UMGF requires students to maintain a minimum admission GPA of 3.00, calculated based on their current graduate program admission. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or hold a valid student visa.
Typically, the deadline for UMGF applications is set in February or March, aligning with the start of the academic year for new graduate students.

Eligibilities
- Admission: Must be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a master’s or Ph.D. student. Pre-master’s and occasional students are not eligible.
- Admission Hold: Applicants should not have an active, admission-related hold on their student account during the provisional admission period.
- GPA Requirement: A minimum admission GPA of 3.00 is required based on admission to the current graduate program. Some departments may impose stricter GPA requirements.

Application Process
Eligibility Review: To apply for the UMGF, ensure you meet the following criteria:
- Be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a master’s or Ph.D. student.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in your most recent undergraduate or graduate degree.
- Have no active, admission-related holds on your student account during the provisional admission period.
- Be registered full-time in the graduate program recommended for the UMGF award.

Submit Application Materials: Depending on your department’s requirements, you will typically need to submit:
- A completed application form
- A copy of your CV
- Academic transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation
- A personal statement
Interview Process: After submission, your department or unit will review your application and may invite you for an interview.
Departmental Recommendation: If selected, your department or unit will recommend you to the Faculty of Graduate Studies for the UMGF.
Award Decision: The Faculty of Graduate Studies will review all departmental recommendations and award UMGFs to the most qualified candidates.
