Nestled in the northwestern quadrant of Europe, with far-reaching territories in the Caribbean, the Netherlands stands as the preeminent member of the four constituent nations comprising the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Comprising twelve provinces, it shares its eastern border with Germany, while Belgium lies to the south, and its northern and western borders are graced by the North Sea’s expansive coastline. Additionally, a unique geopolitical relationship exists with France on the partitioned island of Saint Martin in the Caribbean. Maritime boundaries are also shared with the United Kingdom, Germany, and Belgium. Dutch is the official language, with West Frisian also recognized in Friesland, and Dutch, English, and Papiamento being official languages in the Caribbean territories.

The very name "Netherlands" translates to "lower countries," aptly reflecting its predominantly low-lying and flat terrain, with an astounding 26% of the landmass sitting below sea level. These below-sea-level regions, known as polders, are largely the product of land reclamation efforts dating back to the 14th century.
During the Republican era, which commenced in 1588, the Netherlands embarked on an unparalleled epoch of political, economic, and cultural prowess, known as the Dutch Golden Age, positioning itself as a formidable force within Europe and on the global stage. This period was marked by the widespread influence of its trading enterprises, the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company, which established colonies and trading outposts across the globe.
With a populace of 17.8 million individuals residing within a compact total area of 41,850 square kilometers (16,160 square miles)—33,500 square kilometers (12,900 square miles) of which constitutes land—the Netherlands ranks as the 16th most densely populated nation, boasting a population density of 531 individuals per square kilometer (1,380 individuals per square mile). Despite its modest size, the Netherlands has emerged as the world’s second-largest exporter of food and agricultural products by value, a feat attributable to its fertile soil, temperate climate, advanced agricultural practices, and innovative spirit. The nation’s four most significant cities are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht, with Amsterdam being the most populous and serving as the nominal capital.
The NL Scholarship, previously known as the Holland Scholarship, is tailored for international students hailing from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who aspire to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies in the Netherlands.
