The Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) program at UBC guarantees that the most exceptional PhD, DMA, and MDPhD scholars receive substantial financial backing, amounting to a minimum of $18,200 annually, coupled with tuition coverage for up to four years of their doctoral pursuits. This initiative empowers UBC to persist in attracting and nurturing extraordinary domestic and international doctoral candidates, affording them a reliable foundation of funding throughout their academic and research endeavors.

The Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) office is engaged in ongoing dialogues and proactive initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of UBC graduate students who identify as part of marginalized or underrepresented groups, including Indigenous, Black, Persons of Colour (IBPOC), LGBTQ2S+, and individuals with disabilities.

Benefits:
Recipients will receive a minimum financial support of $18,200 per annum, along with tuition coverage for up to four years of doctoral study.

Eligibilities:
This fellowship is available to both domestic and international students. Typically, it is awarded to those embarking on their first year of full-time PhD, DMA, or MDPhD studies, though it may also be extended to current students. The 4YF funding is generally provided for up to four years, although the duration may be shorter under certain conditions (refer to the 4YF Guidelines for details). Funding is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance.

Students who hold any of the following Tri-Agency awards are automatically designated as 4YF recipients: Vanier Scholarships, Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Awards, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships.

Doctoral students who secure Tri-Agency scholarships may qualify for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive the 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding ceases, continuing until four years post the commencement of the external award, or until the conclusion of their fifth year in the doctoral program, whichever is earlier.

Other major external scholarship awardees who are selected as 4YF recipients may also be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive the 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external funding concludes, continuing until four years post the 4YF start date or until the end of their fifth year in the doctoral program, whichever is earlier.

Eligible Regions: Open to all.

Application Process:
To be considered for the Four Year Fellowship funding, students must submit an application for admission to the appropriate graduate program at UBC. All PhD, DMA, and MDPhD applicants who are offered admission are automatically considered for 4YF funding.
